Berlin was in a poetic and mystical frame of mind, painting a series of sleeping figures in a sense of autobiography (including his oils Sleeping Gypsy and Wandering Jew). This is a typically flowing pencil sketch produced at the same time and reminiscent of his elegant sculptures.
