Dedicated to Sven Berlin

A great way to start the New Year with our first dedicated News letter!

Always so much to say about this charismatic, larger than life artist, who knew the real meaning of resilience and determination. What better time to give him a space of his own.

In addition, we are delighted that Sven’s first self-portrait, an oil painting from 1938 has come in to the collection and we are hoping that one day, when normal times return, we will be able to exhibit it…

A few more intriguing items have been added to the Art Shop, including two atmospheric drawings from Berlin’s trips to the annual Gypsy Festival in Les Saintes Maries de la Mer in the Camargue, France, a memorable event in May when Gypsies gather from all over Europe in a pilgrimage to celebrate their patron Saint, Black Sara.

Berlin describes the event in his book Dromengro: Man of the Road and on one occasion, with his second wife, Juanita, he accompanied the actress Mai Zetterling as an ‘advisor’ when she was making the short film The Lords of Little Egypt. Juanita appears in the film which was broadcast in 1961 and, more recently, in 2016.

Do let us know if you have a story to tell about Sven Berlin. Did you meet him? Do you have some of his work that you love? Would you be interested in establishing a Sven Berlin appreciation society?

For now, stay safe and hope you continue to enjoy the website.
